LED Project

Build a simple LED circuit using a battery, resistor, and alligator clips. A great introduction to how circuits work.

Supplies:  1× 9V Battery (not included)  |  1× LED  |  1× Green Clip (470 Ω) Resistor  |  2× Alligator Clips  |  1× Alligator Clip Lead

⚠️ Safety First

  • Don't touch both battery terminals at the same time.
  • Always include a resistor with the LED to keep your LED from breaking.

Now for the construction!

  1. 1

    Choose the green clip resistor. Attach one of the resistor's clips to the positive (+) side of the battery. The positive side is the one with the smaller connection to the battery.

  2. 2

    Identify LED leads. The anode (positive) is the long lead; the cathode (negative) is the short lead.

  3. 3

    Connect resistor to LED. Attach the other end of the resistor to the LED anode (long lead). Need more help? Clip the resistor to the LED anode (long end) so metal touches.

  4. 4

    Wire the other side of the battery. Connect the cathode (negative end — shorter lead) of the LED to the bigger terminal of the battery, the negative side. Use the alligator clip lead.

  5. 5

    You're done! The LED should turn on. If not, try turning it around and connecting each of the wires to the other sides.

Buzzer Project

Build a buzzer circuit with a push switch. When you press the button, the buzzer sounds! This project introduces switches and polarity.

Supplies:  1× 9V Battery (not included)  |  1× Buzzer  |  1× Black Clip (150 Ω) Resistor  |  1× Small Push Switch  |  2× Alligator Clips  |  1× Alligator Clip Lead

⚠️ Safety First

  • Don't short battery terminals.
  • Make connections secure so clips don't touch each other accidentally.
  • Always use a resistor in between the buzzer and one side of the 9V.

Now for the construction!

  1. 1

    Identify the buzzer terminals. Find the positive (anode) and negative (cathode) on the buzzer. There is a (+) next to the anode.

  2. 2

    Connect the buzzer's positive terminal to the battery's positive terminal. Clip the positive terminal of the buzzer to the battery's free connection using an alligator clip. Make sure the connection is tight, and that only the (+) side of the buzzer is touching the clip and battery.

  3. 3

    Connect the black clip 150 Ω resistor to the negative side of the battery. The negative side is bigger, usually marked with (−). (−) = Negative, (+) = Positive.

  4. 4

    Connect the switch to the free end of the resistor. Clip the resistor to one of the terminals (the little wires connected to the switch) of the small push switch. Be careful that the resistor's clip only touches one of the switch's terminals.

  5. 5

    Connect buzzer's negative terminal to the switch using the alligator clip lead. Clip one side of the alligator clip lead to the buzzer's negative terminal (the side not connected to the battery), and clip the other side to the free terminal of the small push switch.

  6. 6

    You're Done! Carefully press the push switch — the buzzer should sound while it is pressed.

If nothing happens: Check that the buzzer's polarity is correct (positive on positive side of battery) and that all alligator clips are touching metal parts with tight connections.

Still not working? Try removing the switch and connecting the alligator clip lead straight to the buzzer and resistor. Also make sure you are using the black clip, 150 Ω resistor.
